Agenda item: Approval of the minutes of the
meeting of 10/20.
Action Taken: The minutes were approved as
submitted.
Agenda item: Discussion of the English
Composition GE issue.
Discussion: Sharp, Sharer and Bizarro
explained that NC State University has recently changed their general education
requirement to a single four credit course, from its previous requirement of
two three credit courses analogous to the Engl 1100 and 1200 courses offered at
ECU. The discussion centered on the importance of the writing component in the
GE requirement. There was also some discussion on possible ways to deal with transferring
credits of students coming from NC
State.
Action Taken: Bailey moved that the Committee
attempt to find out how many students transfer from NC State to ECU on an
average, and their average verbal SAT scores. The motion passed.
Agenda item: Ongoing review of the General
Education requirements.
Discussion: The Committee reassessed its
present stance on the new General Education requirements. It was agreed that in
addition to the GE requirements themselves, they would produce a document for
the Undergraduate Catalog that explains the basis of the new GE requirements to
the students.
