*Hurricane (Advisory)
Campus administrators continue to monitor forecasts for Hurricane Idalia.
While the storm is expected to produce heavier rain and wind for counties closer to the coast, all forecasts continue to predict 2-4 inches of rain and 20-30 mph winds for Pitt County, beginning Wednesday night. These conditions will be similar to a strong thunderstorm.
At this time, classes and operations are expected to remain on regular schedule. Forecasts can change rapidly and significantly so continue to monitor ECU emergency communications.
Anyone traveling should pay close attention to the weather. All employees and students should use their own judgment based of their specific situation. Be careful of hydroplaning while traveling on wet roads. Do not drive through moving or standing water or around barriers.
Stay tuned to local weather stations or the National Weather Service for the latest updates on Hurricane Idalia. Any updates to campus operations will be announced through ECU Alert.
*Hurricane Idalia
Campus administrators are monitoring the track of Hurricane Idalia.
While the storm is expected to strengthen as it approaches Florida and the exact path and impacts for campus are unclear, all forecasts predict significant weakening as it approaches North Carolina. Currently, 4-6 inches of rain and 20-30 mph winds, similar to a strong thunderstorm, are expected in Greenville Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Locations south of Greenville and along the coast are expected to receive more wind and rain.
At this time, classes and operations will remain on regular schedule. Forecasts can change rapidly and significantly so continue to monitor ECU emergency communications.
Anyone traveling should pay close attention to the weather. Be careful of hydroplaning while traveling on wet roads. Do not drive through moving or standing water. Do not swim in flood waters; you can drown due to swift moving water or entanglement with debris. Also, flood waters typically contain raw sewage and hazardous chemicals.
As we enter peak hurricane season, all divisions and departments are reminded to:
- Review department/unit emergency preparation guides
- Discuss emergency procedures with your faculty, staff and students
- Review office and laboratory preparations
- Advise faculty, staff, and students to prepare for their safety at home
- Back up all important computer data
- Make sure windows are closed and latched
- Contact Facilities Services with questions about preparations
For tips on how to prepare your home and office, review the Hazardous Weather Response Plan: https://oehs.ecu.edu/emergency-management/weather-resources/. Visit ready.gov for additional information regarding hurricane preparedness.
