ECU K-12's master of arts in education in instructional technology is well known for its nationally-recognized, award-winning faculty who apply instructional design theory to best practices in classrooms. The MAEd program in instructional technology places growing emphasis on developing students complex thinking required for the new century. MAEd IT graduates use digital tools and resources to promote critical, creative thinking in K-12 students.

Faculty members take pride in our graduates who work as technology coordinators or facilitators in K-12 school systems across the state as well as other regions around the country. Many of our graduates enter into professions in the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, while others continue as master teachers and leaders in their schools. All of our graduates are well grounded in principles for teacher professional development.

The MAEd in instructional technology provides a well-rounded educational experience. The program includes a core of instructional design courses that lay a foundation for future study. Then there are specific, applied instructional technology courses that connect with the K-12 school setting. Another set of courses provide a core of experiences in leadership, research, and diversity. Finally, a culminating internship allows the student to apply his/her learning in the personal educational setting.

ECU's programs in instructional technology have gained national attention for producing professionals ready to make a difference in the lives of teachers and students. Students completing the MAEd in IT qualify for both 077 advanced licensure and the 18079 special endorsement needed to work as Technology Coordinator or Technology Director in North Carolina Schools.

The MAEd in instructional technology is 100-percent online with courses designed to ensure students are well grounded in theoretical research, yet able to develop the practical skills and attributes of a technology leader in the local school system. Courses are planned so that students are able to complete all assignments and readings as part-time graduate students while continuing to be fully employed in their school setting.

The MAEd in instructional technology is designed for students seeking employment in schools or other agencies as technology facilitators, coordinators, or program directors. The mission of the program is to prepare professionals in the field of instructional technology to plan, implement, and evaluate technology programs within a collaborative teaching environment. Students completing the MAEd in instructional technology are eligible for NC licensure 077 – Instructional Technology Specialist Computers.
